Gallows Humor

"You're so weird" He said with a laugh. "but that's good. It makes you different from other girls"
"Like one of the guys?" Her smile faded. "I've been that before, it's not really my thing."
"No, not like that. It makes you interesting"
"Yeah." She stared out at the skyline.
They sat silently there for what seemed like hours. Neither wanted to go back to the house, back to the roles life had picked for them.
"You can't save me, you know." She said after awhile.
"I know." He pushed her hair out of her face, "But you can. You have such strength, if only you would use it instead of giving up."
"I don't give up, that implies I fought at one point." She stood up to leave but he grabbed her arm.
"Don't let them take you tonight" He warned, "please just this once don't be so passive."
"I will do what I have to if it means we survive... I can't lose you."
"You don't even know me. Everyone thinks you're crazy for talking to me there's no reason for you to risk so much to save me."
"We are the same," Her eyes look far away into some unseen world, " Neither people nor underlings nor gods. Something less and more. This world was not meant for us."
"So why can't we take what should be ours and mold the rest into a  world for us?"
"Millions would die, again. I can't live with that."
"And I can't live with this." He stood in front of her, forcing her to look into his eyes. "Seeing them kill you so many times. Over and over again. I have held you're lifeless body day after day, carried you up to that room. Every time knowing this could be the last."
"Then we are at an impasse for tonight." Her voice was cold; he had crossed a line. "I'll be here tomorrow night, perhaps tempers will be cooler then."
She gathered her clothes and made her way across the rooftops back to her window. All the while avoiding his watchful eyes.
"Every time you die my dear I realize there's so much I've left unsaid" He whispered to the winds, "Survive, I know you have it in you."
